Scottish Annual Meeting held in Perth
The joint BSBI/BSS Scottish Annual Meeting was held very successfully in Perth Museum and Art Gallery this year. We welcomed several members of the public - some of whom even enlisted on the day! Because Perth is a smaller city than our normal venues we were able to have a number of articles printed in local press publicising and reporting the event. An excellent dinner followed in the Royal George conveniently situated across the street.

BSBI secures £15,000 to computerise records
A £15,000 SNH grant was awarded to the BSBI in October 2005 to computerise the paper records of four Scottish vice-counties. These were Roxburgh (v.c.80), East Lothian (v.c.84), Mull (v.c.103), Skye (v.c.104) .
This will allow VCRs to spend less time in front of the computer and more time in the field, so ensuring that BSBI data and expertise is used to maximum conservation benefit. The work has been allocated to four contractors who were selected from the BSBI membership because of their expertise with taxonomic naming and recording software.
Once fully entered and checked the data will also be made available to SNH to help them with their general plant conservation work, and to the general public via the BSBI Website and NBN Gateway.

BSBI tackles ambitious survey programme
Over the summer of 2005, BSBI volunteers and the BSBI Scottish Officer tackled a very ambitious Site Condition Monitoring survey programme. Some 21 sites were identified as potentially suitable for the BSBI. All but one of these sites was completed. Volunteers lead the work on 15 sites, and the Scottish Officer undertook the others.
A second aim was to get BSBI members, SNH staff and other interested botanists and conservationists out in the field together. This made the fieldwork very sociable, and allowed a useful exchange of knowledge. Thirty people helped the lead volunteers and BSBI members spent a total of 120 surveyor days in the field over the summer.

MapMate Workshop held for Scottish BSBI Recorders
A two day residential MapMate Workshop was organised for Scottish BSBI Recorders. Sixteen Scottish Recorders and three ordinary members participated over the two day event, held at Kindrogan Field Studies Centre.
Tutors worked through sections on Data Entry, Queries, Mapping, Synchronisation and Backup in the BSBI MapMate handbook with recorders. The handbook had been comprehensively revised and updated especially for the event, and was accompanied by a training dataset, on CD.
The course was organised by BSBI Scottish Officer, Jim McIntosh. The tutors were Martin Rand, an English Recorder and MapMate expert, and Bob Ellis, BSBI Volunteers Officer.

BSBI delivers seven Site Condition Monitoring Reports
During the summer of 2004, BSBI volunteers undertook a programme of survey work for SNH called Site Condition Monitoring. The reports assess the health of populations of rare and scarce species and give an indication of the overall condition of the site itself. The Scottish Officer helped volunteers complete the reports, and forwarded them to SNH in February 2005.
